Rehearsal for SDB's Romeo et Juliet. Photographer: Gregory Olive. Dancers: Abby Avery & Max Tchernychev. Juliet awakens to find Romeo dead. Not a particularly long sequence, but a choreographically important one. Juliet begins by reiterating the choreography from the bedroom pas de deux, where Romeo is sleeping. In that sequence, he is pretty much in the same position that he dies in. So it ended up being a nice bookend.

So you can't have the last 10 minutes of the ballet be just acting. But if there is too much choreography, the audience will distance itself from the drama. So little "cushions" of dance need to be put in to allow the performers to give a performance that feels both real and dance based.
